To coincide with World Mental Health Day, the City of Fremantle has adopted the Western Australian campaign Act-Belong-Commit in a bid to create a more mentally healthy city.
Act-Belong-Commit is a world-first program developed by Curtin University that encourages everyone to take action to protect and strengthen their mental health and wellbeing.
By signing up to Act-Belong-Commit the City of Fremantle has committed to provide opportunities for community members to be mentally, physically and socially active, encourage people to participate in City events and promote volunteering with community groups.
Community Development director Fiona Hodges said the City was delighted to formalise its commitment to promoting mental health by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Act-Belong-Commit.
“The City currently delivers a range of programs and workshops that bring people together to have fun, which contributes to happiness and good mental health,” Ms Hodges said.
“This MOU will allow the City to formally promote Act-Belong-Commit message and raise awareness of the preventative strategies that are available to residents, workers and visitors alike.
“The City also has great relationships with community organisations and sporting clubs so we can use those connections to help keep people active and give them a sense belonging to the community.”
Mental Health Week is 7-14 October, with World Mental Health Day on 10 October.
