To commemorate 100 years since the end of World War One, Liverpool City Council is hosting a range of free events. These will include an exhibition at Liverpool Regional Museum, a series of projections and installations along Macquarie St, a Freedom of Entry march by soldiers of the Royal Australian Engineers, and a Centenary of Armistice event at Bigge Park on 11 November 2018.

“On 11 November 1918 the guns fell silent after more than four years of global war,” said Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller.

“The people of Liverpool sacrificed a great deal during this time and lost many of their sons and daughters to this conflict.

“To remember their sacrifice and also celebrate peace, we have put together a remarkable program of events and exhibitions that will appeal to people of all ages.”

The Peace Comes to Liverpool exhibition has a fascinating range of World War One-era artefacts and memorabilia on display and will be launched at Liverpool Regional Museum on Saturday 20 October.

Every night, from 1 to 11 November, Macquarie Street will be brought to life with digital projections and installations.

‘Visions of Peace’ will feature community stories, local history and tributes to Australia’s servicemen and women and will form a connecting trail from St Luke's Anglican Church, Macquarie Mall and the Memorial School of Arts. There will also be a program of activities and performances on the evenings of 1-3 and 8-11 November, from 7.30pm to 9pm.

“I also encourage residents to come out and show their support for our soldiers as the Corps of the Royal Australian Engineers marches through the Liverpool CBD on Sunday morning 4 November. This will be followed by a free BBQ, entertainment and rides at Bigge Park,” Mayor Waller said.

“The Royal Australian Engineers will re-affirm their Freedom of Entry honour originally granted for their service to our city and our country in 1959.”

The highlight of the commemorations will be a special community event at Bigge Park.

“At 11am on 11 November the church bells will ring out across Liverpool to remember the end of World War One,” Mayor Waller said.

“The Liverpool RSL sub-branch will be hosting a special commemorative service at Bigge Park, and then there will be a huge community celebration called ‘Liverpool Remembers.’

“Children will love the circus workshops and vintage fashion shows, and there will be music, games, food, and a 12 pounder cannon complete with limber and six horses.

“These really are once-in-a-lifetime events and I hope residents will join me in celebrating this momentous occasion by showing their support for our community and our men and women in the armed services.”
