Stepping up this October for Walk to School 2018 Published: 10 October 2018

Primary schools across Cardinia Shire are stepping up to the challenge of walking, riding, skating and scooting to school as much as possible this October for Walk to School 2018.

Cardinia Shire Mayor Cr Collin Ross said participating in Walk to School is a fun, social and healthy way for children and families to incorporate being active into every day.

“During October, students from 19 participating primary schools in Cardinia Shire will be committing to walk, ride, skate, and scoot to school where possible. Getting school in an active way is great for getting the body and brain ready for a productive day, can be a social activity, and has many health benefits,” said Cr ross.

This year, schools will be getting active and participating in friendly competition with each other. The most active school will win a sports day run by Aligned Leisure at their school later in Term 4. The winning school can decide on what sports they would like offered on the day and students will ‘come and try’ rotating from one activity to the next.

Schools are also encouraging and supporting students who cannot walk, ride, skate or scoot to school to complete laps of the school basketball court or oval before school.

Proudly supported by Cardinia Shire Council since 2010, the VicHealth campaign aims to help Victorian kids increase their daily physical activity to improve their health.

“We are proud to be supporting and facilitating VicHealth’s Walk to School campaign in Cardinia Shire for the eighth year running. Last year we saw 6,000 local students walk, ride, skate or scoot to school in October – let’s see if we can beat that record this year!” said Cr Ross.

Additionally, Council’s Walk to School selfie competition is happening again in 2018. All entries into the selfie competition will go in the draw to win one of three gift vouchers to the Life of Bikes in Pakenham and submitted selfies will be shared on Council’s Facebook page to help motivate others to get active.

Students and families can participate in the Walk to School selfie competition by sending their photos with their name, contact details and the location of the photo to Council’s Active Children Officer by email – [email protected]

Entries into the Walk to School selfie competition close 5pm, Friday 2 November 2018.
