Plastic-Free Bassendean

After three successful pilot programs on the east coast that have made significant reductions in single-use plastic items from food service and hospitality outlets in Noosa, Byron Bay and Wollongong - Boomerang Alliance and the Town have signed an agreement to deliver the pilot program for WA here in Bassendean.

The program is Communities Taking Control (CTC) and it is a tried and tested model that brings knowledge and well-established supplier networks to facilitate a major shift away from single-use plastic takeaway items in the our community.

The first pilot program “Plastic Free Noosa” specifically targeted 6 single-use plastic items often found in litter, for elimination from use – straws, coffee cups and lids, plastic food ware, containers, water bottles and thicker plastic bags. It was then rolled out in Byron Bay and in Wollongong. Each achieved wide scale change through engaging directly with local businesses, events, markets event organisers and their suppliers.

Through funding received from the WA Waste Authority the Plastic-free Bassendean project will employ an on-ground Coordinator to work with these target sectors. When these organisations make the switch away from single-use plastics the public follow.

“The Town of Bassendean is firmly committed to going plastic free.  We have a number of initiatives already underway across the Council area, but the opportunity to support Boomerang Alliance to create ‘Plastic-Free Bassendean’ will help us turn our vision into reality,” said Bassendean Mayor, Councillor Renee McLennan.  “We encourage the residents of Bassendean to get behind this program and support those businesses that are taking steps to reduce plastic pollution and drive positive outcomes for our environment”. 

Jayne Paramor, Deputy Director of Boomerang Alliance added “We hope that this will be the beginning of a state-wide program that will change the plastic pollution landscape in Perth and across Western Australia,”  “We look forward to seeing the program get into full swing in coming months and to seeing the whole of WA take up the challenge to go plastic free.”
