Kingston Council and local police have joined forces to remind the community to be wary of door-to-door salespeople and unidentified visitors.

The warning comes following reports to council of suspicious door knockers around the Edithvale area in recent weeks.

Kingston’s Local Area Police Commander Inspector Bruce Kitchen said residents should call 000 if they observe any suspicious behaviour or are concerned for their safety.

“Before opening the door to any unsolicited visitors, ask for the identification and have them pass this under the door, however if you are in any doubt keep your door closed,” said Inspector Kitchen.

Inspector Kitchen suggested residents write down the description of anyone acting suspiciously, obtain their vehicle type and registration number and then contact the police.

Kingston Mayor Steve Staikos said that while there are many legitimate businesses and services which make home visits to clients, it never hurts to verify the authenticity of a person who knocks on your door.

“Council offers a number of services where our staff make home visits, however these appointments are always confirmed ahead of time and staff wear uniforms and have ID available to confirm their identity,” Cr Staikos said.

“All of us should feel confident to ask first for identification before allowing anyone to access our home.”
