The Campaspe Animal Shelter has won the national title for 'Outstanding Council Animal Shelter' in the Jetpets Companion Animal Rescue Awards.

Public Environments Manager Kate Lemon said this afternoon’s announcement was not just a credit to the Animal Shelter and council, but the entire community that has supported the shelter, helping them do their job better.

“The shelter has worked very hard to increase engagement and communication within the community and the support provided by residents in our shire has allowed us to do our job well,” Ms Lemon said.

The announcement highlighted Campaspe Animal Shelter’s progressive adoption marketing and policies as well as community outreach and support as industry leading initiatives.

“The biggest compliment of all was hearing officials at the presentation urging other councils around the country to take a look at the great work of the Campaspe Animal Shelter and follow along the way,” Ms Lemon said.

A special mention was made regarding the shelter’s foster and volunteer programs that help to ensure the best outcomes for animals that come into care.

Beating finalists from Logan City Council City Standards and Animal Care, and Sutherland Shire Council Animal Shelter, Campaspe Animal Shelter’s pro-active implementation of strategies to reduce intake and manage impounded animals, has seen them finish ahead of all other councils in Australia.
