Following the success of their ‘Language to Literacy’ conference in May this year, Western Downs Libraries have received the annual 2018 Local Government Award presented by Queensland Public Libraries Association at a recent QPLA event.
With over 40 Local Government libraries associated with the Queensland Public Libraries Association, Western Downs Regional Council’s Western Downs Libraries were the recipient of the annual Local Government Award receiving the honour at a recent event.
The prize was awarded to Western Downs Libraries for their submission detailing the success of their first ‘Language to Literacy’ conference earlier in the year which featured authors Mem Fox and keynote speakers Dr Alice Brown and Julie Dunn.
Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Councillor Kaye Maguire said it was an honour to receive this award.
“Our libraries do such an amazing job offering so many fantastic programs to our community throughout the year, so it was a privilege to be recognised and awarded for our inaugural early literacy conference which received very positive feedback,” she said.
“Not only do Western Downs Libraries run many public programs, but they also offer vital services to the entire community every day so important recognition that is given to our libraries is greatly appreciated.”
Western Downs Libraries Coordinator and Queensland Public Libraries Association President Lisa Harth said she was excited for her team to be recognised at state level.
“The Local Government Award is only given to one library service per year by the QPLA Board, so it was very exciting to see our team recognised this year,” she said.
Western Downs Libraries delivered another exciting community event to around 1,000 people in Dalby on Saturday with the return of their ‘Fun Palaces’ regional tour including free and engaging activities for the entire family.
‘Fun Palaces’ will be visiting Chinchilla, Dalby, Jandowae and Miles this month.
