Let’s activate Moree’s main street – Pop-Up Shop space available

Moree Plains Shire Council is calling for Expressions of Interest from organisations, not-for-profits and individuals who would like to utilise the vacant shop spaces in the Moree Max Centre for a pop-up shop or short-term occupation.

Economic and Community Development Manager Mark Connolly explained the initiative forms part of a program which aims to help activate the main street by filling empty shop fronts and inspires investment in the Moree Plains Shire.

“This initiative includes short term licence agreements ranging from 30 to 90 days for Shop 17 or Shop 16 at the Max Centre, as an initial step.”

“The goal is to activate the main street through innovative activities which will compliment and add to the retail environment of Moree’s CBD.”

“The pop-up shop and short-term occupation arrangement opens the door for locals to trial business concepts or gives local online businesses a chance to have a ‘bricks and mortar’ experience with reduced commitment and minimal costs.”

Community organisations and local sports clubs may also be interested in using the space to promote local events or celebrate milestones, such as the recent Moree Boars 100 year anniversary. Council has also received interest from creative individuals wanting to display local artworks to lift the vibrancy of the CBD – the possibilities are exciting!

“I encourage interested applicants to review the Merit Criteria and submit an Expression of Interest form,” said Mr Connolly.

If successful, the model can also be replicated by private shop owners who may wish to fill a vacant shop on a short term basis until a more permanent tenant is identified. This provides increased security and care for vacant buildings while also increasing the amenity of the CBD. Similar programs across Australia have also led to an increase in viable long tenancies.

The first round of submissions will close 5pm, 26 October 2018 with the successful occupant determined by the General Manager.
