Reduce water use this National Water Week

Eurobodalla Council will hold a stall at Moruya Country Markets on Saturday 27 October for National Water Week.

Council staff will be on hand to answer questions about level 1 water restrictions, which come into effect on Saturday 20 October, as well as tips for saving water in the house and garden.

Residents can also swap environmental weeds from their garden for free native water-wise plants and water customers can redeem the tear-off section of their latest water rates insert to get a free extra plant.

Council’s Sustainability Education Officer Gillian Kearney said National Water Week was the perfect opportunity for residents to take action and reduce their water use.

“It’s even more important now that the community is largely relying on the water stored in Deep Creek Dam for its water supply due to low river levels,” she said.

“Council’s website lists plenty of simple ways residents can change their everyday habits in household water use to make a real difference in conserving our most precious resource.

“These include only doing full loads for the washing machine or dishwasher, avoiding rinsing dishes under a running tap, flushing the toilet less and limiting showers to three minutes or less.

“You could also use mulch and compost to help retain water in your soil, and consider drought-tolerant native plants that don’t need a lot of water to thrive.”

Mrs Kearney said Council’s water-wise gardening program could help residents choose appropriate plants.

“Our water-wise garden checks are free for Council’s water customers and involve a personal visit by a friendly member of Council’s environment team,” Mrs Kearney said.

“Garden owners can learn some easy tips that will help them save water, spend less time watering and grow a garden that can flourish with local conditions, including the current drought.

“As part of the visit, gardeners can also receive some free native plants and a hose trigger nozzle.”

The Water Week stall and plant swap will be held Saturday 27 October at Moruya Country Markets at Riverside Park from 8am.
