Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) Australia Day Committee Chair Cr Mike Williams said “the local Toowoomba City Australia Day Committee is seeking committee members who are passionate about making sure the unsung heroes in our community are recognised for their efforts”.
“Local Australia Day Committees plan and conduct Australia Day events in their local area with assistance from council to promote the awards and recommend award recipients to Council” Cr Williams said.
‘The Toowoomba City Australia Day Committee meets once a month, beginning in October.
‘There are two award levels – local and regional. Local Australia Day committees select each local award category winner. They can then forward nominations onto the regional Australia Day committee to be considered for a regional award.
‘Australia Day means different things to everyone. It represents an occasion to come together and reflect on what being an Australian really means.
‘If you are passionate about being an Australian this is an opportunity to be involved not only in the celebrations but rewarding those in the community that have excelled in supporting and giving back to their community.
Celebrating Australia Day and being part of the local Australia Day Organising Committee is also a time to think about our past, our rich traditions and how we have grown and evolved. We are a vibrant diverse culture made up of people from all nationalities who have one thing in common ‘we are proud to call Australia our home’ Cr Williams said.
Local Toowoomba City Australia Day celebrations and presentation of awards are held at Picnic Point each year.
