Workers in Fremantle are being encouraged to Ride and Shine tomorrow, with the City of Fremantle offering cyclists a free breakfast as part of Ride to Work day.
The breakfast and coffee will be available at Pioneer Park, opposite the Fremantle Station, from 7am-9am.
There will also be experts from Mercer Cycles on hand to offer some useful tips and give bikes a quick once over, plus electric bike demonstrations and information stalls.
Fremantle Tours will also be running mini tours of Fremantle’s heritage-listed West End.
Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt said riding a bike to work was an excellent way to start the day.
“Because Freo is relatively flat it’s an excellent place for riding a bike,” Mayor Pettitt said.
“As part of our One Planet commitment to sustainable transport, and through our Local Bike Plan, we have a goal to make Freo the most bike-friendly city in Australia.
“Over the past decade the City has invested millions of dollars to make cycling a safer and more attractive option for both commuters and recreational riders.”
Since 2013 the City of Fremantle has installed 2.3km of on-road bike lanes and 1km of new bike paths, upgraded six key intersections with bike head-start facilities and rolled out Bicycle Awareness Zones over 6km of local and city centre roads.
The City has also upgraded more than 2km of path along popular coastal routes, installed more than 160 bike parking bays and added green bike lane treatments at intersections along four major roads.
The City of Fremantle’s Local Bicycle Plan is currently under review, with more than a hundred people completing a recent survey on the My Say Freo website.
The plan, adopted in 2014, aims to double the number of bike trips in Fremantle by 2018 by providing better cycling infrastructure, reducing the barriers to cycling and encouraging more people to ride a bike.
A new bike plan is expected to be presented to Fremantle Council for endorsement early next year.
