Eurobodalla Council is saying a big “thank you” to the shire’s 4000-plus volunteer carers this National Carers Week.

According to the 2016 Census, there were 4,271 carers providing unpaid assistance to a person with a disability, long-term illness or old age in Eurobodalla.

Council’s Community Care Manager Sally Pryor praised all carers for their selfless contribution to the community.

“We’d really like to say a big ‘thank you’ for what is sometimes a thankless role. Because of their contribution, parents, children, family members and friends have exceptional support and care,” she said.

“It takes great strength of character, a remarkable sense of purpose and huge commitment to care for another person. We need to acknowledge this, celebrate our carers’ achievements and ensure we support them.”

Ms Pryor said that while there were many rewards, caring could be demanding and often restricted the lives of carers and their families.

“Feedback from carers is that they often struggle alone for too long before admitting they need extra support,” she said.

“This includes both hands-on support to assist with the physical side of caring, but also emotional support and finding opportunities for respite for themselves.

“Information and help is available. We encourage carers to contact My Aged Care – it’s the starting point for carers to find out more about the types of services available in the local area.”

Council provides support services including respite care, to enable carers to take a break to rest and re-energise, social support to reduce isolation, build friendships and provide companionship, group outings and community transport to medical appointments, shopping and other errands.
