Fairfield Showground milestone reached

Work to lay the playing surface for the AFL/cricket/festival oval is now ready to begin.

Work will now start on installing drainage and irrigation for the oval. Earthworks are continuing for the international size football field and an all-weather synthetic field ahead of turf being laid in late spring.

Fairfield City Mayor Frank Carbone said it was an important and exciting milestone.

“This is the biggest project ever undertaken in Fairfield City,” Mayor Carbone said.

“Soon, Fairfield City will have a new epicentre for community life. It will have something for everybody, whether you’re a sporting and fitness enthusiast, a festival goer, or just looking for somewhere to take your kids for a bike ride or to kick a ball around.

“Council is committed to supporting healthy outdoor living options for our residents by creating venues for families to spend quality time together.”

When completed, there will be something for everyone at the new Multicultural and Sporting Centre of Excellence.

In addition to the fields, stage one of the redevelopment includes:

A lighting upgrade for the international size football field and installation of high-standard lighting for all playing fields; Open-sided stage with roof for concerts, festivals, field games and outdoor cinema; New amenities facility, with restrooms, change rooms and kiosk. A play zone, with circuit path, high-quality playground equipment, exercise equipment, amenities, off-leash dog park, bike learning track, relaxation area and small synthetic five-a-side playing field; Laser lighting system for sporting/community events oval, under awning lighting, tree uplighting, upgraded entry lighting; Upgrade of the old Moorefield Grandstand, and more seating for existing Parklands Grandstand; Portable stage, furniture, shade sails, awnings and banner flagpoles; and Improvements to carparking, community garden and information signage.

Stage two of the redevelopment includes a regional multicultural indoor sports centre.

Stage three will include a new grandstand.

“We are transforming this under-used gem into the jewel of Fairfield’s crown. It will be our very own Centennial Park,” Mayor Carbone said.

“It will be the new epicentre of cultural and sporting life for the residents of Fairfield City and builds on our commitment to making Fairfield City a great place to live, work and raise a family.”
