Community groups to share in $78,000

From gymnasts and tiny tots to horse enthusiasts and triathletes, the second round of the 2018 Central Highlands Regional Council community grants program will see groups from across the region share in more than $78 000.
Every year, council offers two rounds of community grants for both community groups and sporting clubs to purchase equipment, repair facilities or promote and stage events.
Twenty-seven applications were received for this round and assessed by the Community Grants Committee, with twenty-two applications successful.
Mayor Kerry Hayes said he was impressed by the calibre of the applications.
‘It’s fantastic to see community groups from all walks of life dedicated to improving their facilities, services and programs for the benefit of our residents,’ he said.
‘Council’s community grants program helps get important projects off the ground sooner, and I would encourage all local organisations to have a look at the criteria and apply in the next round.’
Susan Consedine, treasurer of CQ Pet Rescue, said their $5000 grant would go towards manufacturing collection cages for the upcoming container refund scheme.
‘Lots of people want to support our vital work, but with so many worthy causes and charities, no-one can support them all.
‘These cages will enable people to support CQPR without reaching into their pockets, by simply dropping off their empty cans and bottles.
‘Funds raised from the containers will be used locally to cover vet bills for our rescue animals.
Ms Consedine said this project will have other great benefits for our community such as increased recycling, decreased waste and flow-on effects for the local economy.
Another grant recipient was the Anakie and District Community Hall Committee that received $3000 towards their 10,000 steps trail.
Secretary Josie Carew said the trail will link the streets and signs of Anakie, finishing at the new art installation at the crossroads.
‘A beautiful walkway around our town will encourage visitors to stay longer and enjoy their stay.’
