A large land slip has been cleared from Kempsey Road but the road remains closed until a safety assessment at another site can be completed.

The inspection has been postponed because torrential rain today has made that section of road impassable.

An Armidale Regional Council crew used a front end loader yesterday to clear the land slip, which has blocked the connection between Armidale and Kempsey since Monday.

The land slip occurred at Blackbird Flat, just west of the Kempsey Shire Council border, after an estimated 170mm of rain fell at the site in just a few days and softened the steep embankment.

Conditions at a nearby section, known by locals as ‘the big hill’, remained treacherous, prompting Council to keep the road closed to traffic while a further evaluation can be undertaken.

Staff from both councils have installed a number of warning signs on both sides of the site.
