Campaspe Shire Council adopted the Environment Strategy 2018-22, which sets out the legal obligations and other requirements of council relating to environmental management, at Tuesday night’s council meeting.

Mayor, Cr Adrian Weston said in addition to council’s statutory requirements, the strategy also identifies organisational partnership opportunities, key to achieving mutual environmental benefits.

“The Environment Strategy is an important document, providing guidance and direction to council on environmental issues, and looks at what environmental activities council must do, as well as chooses to do,” Cr Weston said.

The strategy was developed in consultation with the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority, Department and Environment, Land, Water and Planning, the Landcare community and internal staff to ensure the document aligns with state and regional themes and directions.

The strategy’s overall vision is “protection of our natural environment and delivery of programs and services to support a connected and healthy community”, with four themes:

Conservation Climate change adaptation and mitigation Community engagement and partnerships Council’s responsibilities

It documents council’s commitment to voluntary environmental management and maintains a summary of federal and state legislation, state, regional and local government policies, plans and strategies.

“The strategy provides an overview of the shire’s natural assets and the challenges our environment and community face due to climate change, pest, plant and animals, ongoing loss of habitat and managing water quantity and quality,” Cr Weston said.

Current environmental programs will guide council in setting policies and determining roles, responsibilities and priorities in the future.
