Laughs and a boost for regional towns

Packed halls in three Western Downs towns were entertained by some of Australia’s most talented performers.

The fourth year of Not Just For Laughs brought comedians Merrick Watts and Mel Buttle as well as country music stars Adam Eckersley and Brooke McClymont to the region.

Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Paul McVeigh said this year’s event was one of the best.

“It was fantastic to have more than 700 residents come out for a good night in the community,” he said.

“The rain we had last week didn’t discourage people from coming out and supporting these events, as well as their local community groups.

“We were also blessed to have three show-stopping performances which everyone really enjoyed.”

Local community groups were essential to the success of the evenings, running bars and canteens.

At Drillham, 190 people were out in force to support the community.

The proceeds from bar sales went to the Drillham Hall and Recreation Committee while canteen sales went to the Drillham State School P&C.

Madonna Moore, secretary of the Hall Committee and president of the P&C, said the event was an opportunity to promote the region.

“Council has put in a lot of money into doing up the Drillham Hall, and Not Just For Laughs attracted many people who would not normally engage with the hall,” she said.

“We are still counting the bar takings, but we know the P&C took home nearly $600 from the event.

“It is great for our community to have people coming to events at the hall and supporting two of our local clubs.”

At Glenmorgan, 200 people were in attendance, while 320 packed the Jandowae Memorial Hall.
