To kick off summer and the Nippers season, we teamed up with local surf lifesaving clubs to spread an important message about reducing single use plastics.
Nippers from all over the Northern Beaches including Newport, Warriewood, Narrabeen, South Narrabeen, Dee Why, Collaroy, North Curl Curl and South Curl Curl braved a chilly winters day to participate in the film shoot.
Over 20 Nippers showed off their acting skills and ‘competed’ in a mock carnival with flags, relay and board events, all reported on by our Northern Beaches news ‘journalists’.
The video is part of Council’s award winning Swap This for That waste education campaign to reduce single use plastics and keep our oceans beautiful.
We asked our star ‘journalists’ why they think it’s important to reduce single-use plastics.
Ashley, 12 from Freshwater said:
“As easy as they are to use, ultimately, plastic items that are only used once are ruining the earth.
“If people just make the effort to not use them it will be a whole lot better for the environment and will minimise the pollution in Australia and the whole world.”
Tilly, 12 from Manly said:
"We need to protect the wild life, the environment and our beautiful beaches."
The video will be screened to Nippers at Dee Why SLSC on Sunday 21 October and Newport SLSC on Sunday 28 October, the interclub carnival at Dee Why and will also be on YouTube.
This project is an initiative of the NSW EPA Waste Less Recycle More Initiative, funded from the waste levy.
