The Right to the Night Project pilot, based on Melbourne’s Free To Be initiative, was officially launched in December 2018, and encouraged women to identify and comment on their impressions of public space safety in the CBD, between March and May.    Under the initiative, women used ‘drop pins’ on a web-based interactive map to identify locations and add comments about the space or a particular feature of the space.    The project is a partnership between the City of Ballarat, Federation University, Women’s Health Grampians, the Centre for Multicultural Youth, Australian Catholic University, Ballarat Community Health and Victoria Police.    The Right to the Night project: 

helps to inform decision-making around public safety and urban design  features the use of new technologies and marketing platforms to create a collaborative conservation and public involves women and girls in decisions, developing solutions for safer and more inclusive public spaces  demonstrates leadership around public safety and has a partnership approach to improving community safety  supports the City of Ballarat’s Community Safety Strategic Statement 2017-2021 priority area  - CBD public safety and approaches to community safety issues around partnerships, evidence-based practice, placemaking for safe and health places and spaces, and community strengthening and capacity building.
