The City of Albany are advising residents that rabbit control will begin during late Spring at Emu Point and Mount Adelaide using carrot baits treated with the naturally occurring strain of rabbit calicivirus RHDV1-K5.

The virus is specific to the European rabbit and does not pose a risk to humans, other domestic animals or native wildlife.

Residents wanting more information about the virus and how it works can visit the PestSmart website https://www.pestsmart.org.au/rhdv-k5-frequently-asked-questions/

City of Albany Reserves Officer Carl Beck said wild rabbits cause significant damage to native vegetation, domestic gardens and crops across Australia.

“We have had reports of significant numbers of rabbits at many sites across the City including Emu Point and Mount Adelaide,” Mr Beck said.

For residents who own a pet rabbit it is important they have their pet vaccinated by one of the local veterinarians prior to the release of the virus. More information is available at https://www.pestsmart.org.au/rhdv-k5-what-about-my-pet-rabbit/.
