Councillor Column - Composting program to help households reduce waste

The City has joined forces with Environment House to trial a home composting program that will help Bayswater households reduce their organic waste.

The National Waste Report estimates that a massive 35 percent of our household bins in Australia are made up of food waste. When sent to landfill this waste produces methane, a greenhouse gas that is 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

The City would like to do more than simply fulfil our obligation as a Council to remove waste - at the fore of our thinking is the importance of waste reduction and waste diversion. This program teaches Bayswater families to compost their own food and organic waste, removing it from the waste cycle and using it as rich and valuable fertiliser instead.

Participants are currently trialling a compost bin, worm farm or Bokashi bin at home, and sharing their experiences through regular surveys over the next six months. I'm excited to see the difference this program will make.
