Sustainable House Day a flowering success

Eurobodalla set the bar high on Sustainable House Day last month, claiming the nation-wide record for the most participating properties in any one shire.

Nine Eurobodalla properties opened their gates to the wider community for Sustainable House Day, which motivated thousands of people across Australia to create their own energy-efficient homes and water-wise and bush-friendly gardens.

Those interested in starting their own bush-friendly garden journey can take advantage of one of Council’s popular plant swaps this Saturday at Moruya Markets.

Just bring along bagged environmental weeds from your garden to the environment team’s stall at the markets from 8.30am to 12.30pm and swap them for free native plants.

Council’s Natural Resource Supervisor Courtney Fink-Downes said this year’s Sustainable House Day was a shining example of how switched on our home and garden owners were in terms of living sustainably.

“A shire first was having four private gardens open to walk around and get ideas about making your patch more water wise and bush friendly,” she said.

“The home owners were present and were able to give people advice on many, many years of experience.

“Council is very appreciative of the home owners who happily opened their gardens for everyone to learn from and enjoy.

“The open gardens were an opportunity to see how bush-friendly gardens can look amazing, flower all year round and attract native birds, butterflies and bees while not needing much water.”
