Celebrate International Day of People with Disability

Published on 23 October 2018

International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is held on 3 December each year. In 2018 the City of Hobart is co-presenting a range of free community events to celebrate this important day.

On Thursday 29 November in the Elizabeth Mall, Music Extravaganza will showcase individual performers, musical groups, dance troupes and two newly formed rock bands - part of the Rock Band mentoring program facilitated by the Hobart Rock Band Academy.

Jordan Daniels is a passionate young dancer and singer. For the past two months he’s been mentored by the City of Hobart’s Youth Arts Officer Joel Imber to get him ready to perform his rendition of Michael Jackson’s 'The Way You Make Me Feel' at the Music Extravaganza event.

On Parliament Lawns on Saturday 1 December, a Fun Day Out will allow the community to engage in a range of sport and recreation options including wheelchair basketball, wheelchair AFL, sensory nature play, fun and inclusive track and field events, juggling and more.

Finally, running from 30 November until 6 December at venues around Hobart, a Short Film Festival will share stories of people living with a disability, as well as capturing a range of creative ‘all abilities’ projects happening in southern Tasmania and opening up discussion.

IDPwD aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and celebrate their achievements and contributions.

In Australia, the National Disability Strategy 2010–2020 commits all governments to a nationwide approach aimed at improving the lives of people with disability, their families and carers. The Strategy’s ten-year national framework for reform focuses on better inclusion for people with disability and seeks to create a society that enables people with disability to fulfil their potential as equal citizens.
