Preparing your property for the fire season

Published on 23 October 2018

With summer around the corner, now’s the time to be preparing your property for the bushfire season.

Here are our top tips for preparing your property:

slash grass and keep it under 75mm rake up and remove dry grass, leaves, twigs and loose bark (also called fine fuels) remove any rubbish or material that is likely to cause, maintain or promote a fire store flammable liquids well away from the house store woodpiles away from the house place metal flyscreens or window shutters over windows keep gutters clean of fine fuels remove all noxious weeds from your property face your LPG cylinders vent-pipe away from the house and store securely in an upright position prepare your bushfire survival plan. Property inspections and notices

Council’s Fire Management Officer has begun inspecting properties for fire risk within the shire and will issue fire prevention notices to those properties that pose a fire risk.

If you receive a notice, don’t ignore it as heavy penalties can apply to owners who fail to comply.

Properties are expected to be maintained to the required standard throughout the fire danger period. If you are grazing stock, you must demonstrate that the number is sufficient to reduce the risk and if not, you may be required to do additional fuel reduction work.
