Street sweeper one of shire’s services Wednesday 24 October

One of East Gippsland Shire Council’s services is rarely seen but makes a big difference.

The street sweeper program helps keep our town centres and residential streets clean, removing litter, dirt and leaves.

Council owns a street sweeper and a footpath sweeper, both of which keep busy schedules.

The street sweeper cleans the central business districts of Lakes Entrance and Bairnsdale twice a week, and visits Bruthen, Orbost, Paynesville and Metung once a week.

Residential streets are swept every three months.

Manager Works Mark Burnett said the workload can increase depending on conditions.

“Based on the type of trees in the area, some streets will be swept more frequently in autumn. We also undertake more work after storms to clear debris,” Mr Burnett said.

“The cost of our street and footpath sweeping program is approximately $230,000 each year.”

Council awarded a contract at its August meeting for the supply of a new street sweeper as the existing vehicle is due to be replaced. It is due to arrive in early 2019.
