Back in July 2018, Cessnock City Council endorsed the adoption of a Family and Domestic Violence Protocol for its staff and is proud to announce this has now been formally adopted and will be rolled out across the organisation.
The new protocol focusses on providing a supportive environment for Council employees where they can feel safe and confident in seeking assistance for family and domestic violence.
It will include up to 10 days per annum of paid Family and Domestic Violence Leave which will allow employees to attend legal proceedings and appointments, relocation or making other safety arrangements.
Employees who are affected by family and domestic violence may also be provided with a range of support options, including flexible work arrangements and referral to external support providers.
As part of the new protocol, Council’s Mental Health First Aid Officers, Human Resources team and other key staff attended Domestic Violence Alert training back in August. This is a nationally recognised training that focusses on responding appropriately to family and domestic violence.
Cessnock City Mayor and White Ribbon Ambassador, Councillor Bob Pynsent said he was proud to see Council set this strong example on domestic violence in our community.
“Domestic violence continues to be a huge problem across our region and as one of the largest employers in the area, it is fantastic to see Council putting protocols in place to help staff who are dealing with these issues.”
Council will now undertake an awareness campaign across the organisation highlighting the new protocol to ensure all staff are aware about the availability of support networks if they ever need to use them.
