Central Highlands Regional Council is seeking input from the Rolleston community for the best location to install a meeting-tree power charging station.
Powered by a solar panel, the meeting-tree provides free wi-fi access and power to charge mobile devices during an electricity outage.
Deputy Mayor Gail Godwin-Smith said the meeting-tree is designed to keep residents and visitors connected during times of disaster.
‘The $22,000 meeting-tree is the second of four to be installed across the Central Highlands,’ she said.
‘The device bridges the gap in times of need, when people need to stay connected with with friends and family and emergency services.
‘Often, in times of disaster one of the first utilities to break down is the electricity grid.
But the device is not only useful in times of disaster.
‘It is also a handy device for our tourists.
‘The meeting-tree remains operational all year round and travellers can plug-in to share their stories from exploring our region.’
