Gladstone Regional Council is ensuring the region’s smaller townships are not forgotten when the time to celebrate Australia Day 2019 arrives.

Each year Council offers funds to regional not-for-profit community groups to host a local event that complements Council’s major Australia Day celebrations which, in 2019, will be hosted at Millennium Esplanade, Tannum Sands.

Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said the program also enabled regional centres to celebrate the nation’s day in a manner which reflected each townships’ community.

“Our region’s main Australia Day celebration alternates between Gladstone and Tannum Sands each year and planning is well under way for the 2019 event at Tannum Sands on January 26,” Councillor Burnett said.

“The major event is always popular with people from throughout the Gladstone Region travelling to attend.

“The smaller community celebrations are also great fun, with all sorts of Aussie traditional and novelty events, including cricket matches, barbecue breakfasts, trivia games, billy cart races, barefoot bowls and thong throwing competitions being conducted.”
