Remembrance Day Commemorative Service, interactive activities and educational displays

Remembrance Day is always a solemn and poignant occasion as communities in the former World War One Allied countries pause to remember the fallen.

This year’s commemoration will be especially significant as it will mark the centenary of the day the guns fell silent on the Western Front.

Each year, Campbelltown RSL Sub-Branch leads the Remembrance Day ceremony on 11 November.

Council has partnered with the RSL Sub-Branch to hold a Remembrance Day Commemorative Service for schools in Mawson Park on Friday 9 November that will focus on the inclusion of local school students in the ceremony.

“Throughout the service, there will be explanations about each part of the ceremony and its significance.”

It will be followed by an educational event in the park called A Day to Remember, with the aim for students to learn about the origin and history of Remembrance Day.

Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr George Brticevic, said the inclusion of students in the ceremony, as well as hosting A Day to Remember, provided an opportunity for youngsters to learn about the origins and history of Remembrance Day.

“This event provides a locally relevant educational opportunity for young people about the importance of Remembrance Day and helps to ensure that this knowledge is passed down to future generations,” he said.

Attendees at the event will have the opportunity to participate in educational workshops, see replica setups from World War One, have a photo opportunity with military vehicles and talk to those in our community with a greater understanding of the war and hear their stories.
