Sunday 28 October is Grandparents Day and it’s a great opportunity to celebrate the special relationship and bond between grandparents and grandchildren.

Here are 7 popular ways to spend time with grandchildren on the Northern Beaches.

Get your walking shoes on

The Northern Beaches is home to many accessible walking trails that will lead you through extraordinary scenery, cultural heritage sites and historical icons. Popular accessible walking trails include Narrabeen Lagoon, Stony Range Regional Botanic Gardens in Dee Why and Manly Dam.

Gone fishin’

There’s an endless list of great fishing spots on the Northern Beaches. Grab some bait and take the time to relax and chat with your grandchildren. Popular spots include Little Manly Point, Narrabeen Lake and Manly Dam.

Children under 18 and adults assisting children under 18 are exempt from the recreational fishing fee: find out more on the Department of Primary Industries’ website. Please obey the law to protect our oceans and wildlife.

Become members at your local library

Visit your local Northern Beaches Library and take it in turns to read paragraphs of old or new favourites. Apply for a child’s library card and open up a new magical world of reading for your grandchild.

There are also loads of activities at our libraries for children of all ages including Story Time, Rhyme Time and Lego Club.

Learn about our coastal critters

Pop into the Coastal Environment Centre at North Narrabeen, take a fun workshop or guided tour and learn about the wildlife that lives on the Northern Beaches and why it’s so important that we protect it.

Fly a kite

When it’s too windy for the beach, grab a kite or make your own and head over to any of the 122 sports fields, parks and reserves on the Northern Beaches. Tania Park in Balgowlah Heights is a popular spot for kite flying.

Take three for the Sea

Walk along the beach on a sunny day and ‘Take three for the Sea’ by picking up three pieces of rubbish. Plastic pollution is having a devastating impact on our oceans and this small act can make a difference and teach your grandchildren an important lesson.

Check out a play at Glen Street Theatre

Glen Street Theatre’s calendar has a variety of plays for kids including many childhood classics brought to life such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Possum Magic.

Don’t miss our free Grand Connections expo on Thursday 8 November. It promises to be a jam packed day for grandparents with or without their grandkids with over 20 information stalls, fun interactive play sessions, grandparenting workshops and a family photo booth.
