On Sunday 11 November 2018, is the centenary of the Armistice that ended the First World War. In the lead up to Remembrance Day 2018, Charters Towers Regional Council will be working with community groups to contribute to the commemorations.
On Saturday, 3 November, a special concert – “Voices of Remembrance” will be held at The World Theatre. It will feature Charters Towers Choristers, 60 and Better Songbirds, Combined Schools Choir and Combined Brass Ensemble. Entry will be a gold coin donation, with proceeds going to the local RSL.
On Remembrance Day, the Charters Towers RSL will hold the Remembrance Day commemoration service from 10:30am at the Cenotaph in Gill Street and the public is invited to attend.
In 1918, many communities across the world celebrated the Armistice by ringing bells. More information is available here.
Organisations with bell towers, are encouraged to ring their bells for two minutes at 12.30pm to mark this significant anniversary.
This will ensure the bell ringing does not interfere with traditional Remembrance Day services, especially the one-minute of silence at 11am.
Interested organisations should contact [email protected] by 5pm Friday 2 November 2018 to get involved.
After the service, Council will be hosting a luncheon at the RSL from 12:30pm for a 1.00 p.m. start with guest speaker Michael Brumby. Tickets are $25.00 each and may be purchased at Council's Administration Centre or City Hall. Tickets need to be purchased by 4.00 p.m. Monday 5 November 2018.
The luncheon has been made possible by the Queensland Government’s Queensland Anzac grants program.
“Remembrance Day is an important memorial day to pause and remember those who have served in the armed forces. Being the 100 year anniversary makes this year especially significant and I want to encourage the community to participate in the different activities.” said Mayor Liz Schmidt.
