Canterbury Town Centre upgrade underway

Work begins this week on a $5.2 million upgrade of Canterbury Town Centre, aimed at improving the intersection at Charles Street and Roberts Street. It includes:

New footpaths; Landscaping (planting of trees and creation of garden beds and raingardens); Installation of a charger for electric car owners; Construction of raised pedestrian crossings; Undergrounding of overhead power lines; Installation of new lighting and smart poles; Construction of kerb and gutter;Reconstruction of road pavement; and Installation of new trees and outdoor seating.

City of Canterbury Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour said creating livable and distinctive town centres is a priority for the community and Council.

"Investing in our town centres is about revitalising them and activating main streets," he said.

"In this case, it’s about bringing new energy and excitement to Canterbury, and transforming it into a commercial, social and cultural heart of the City."

 

 

A focus of the upgrades will be on making the centre ‘clean and green’ and ‘moving and integrated’, two of the seven key areas identified by the community in the City’s 10-year visionary plan, CBCity 2028.

"The area will be made even greener, with trees, garden beds and raingardens installed, and the streetscape will be planned for not only cars and public transport, but for cyclists and pedestrians as well," Mayor Asfour said.

Stage one is expected to be completed by late 2019.

 

"Like any major project, there will be some short-term pain, in terms of changed traffic conditions, but the result will be the beautification of the City and a well-planned, innovative and smart town centre," Mayor Asfour said.

A $1.8 million upgrade of Revesby Town Centre is also set to start next year.
