As part of Liverpool’s Centenary of Armistice commemorations, a unique set of light projections of local servicemen and women will be displayed along Macquarie Street, forming a trail connecting St Luke's Anglican Church, Macquarie Mall and the School of Arts.
Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said ‘Visions of Peace’ is an imaginative and original way to display what peace means to the people of Liverpool, and also acknowledge the special contributions made by Liverpool to Australia's war efforts during WWI and beyond.
“Every night, from 1 to 11 November, Macquarie Street will be brought to life with digital projections and installations,” she said.
“Many of the images in Visions of Peace feature local servicemen, servicewomen and their descendants.
“Liverpool City Council invited local residents to tell stories of their ancestors who served. They also shared photographs of them.”
Visions of Peace will also feature a series of images of Australian soldiers from the Liverpool Library and National Archive collections.
Mayor Waller said the displays made by the students from Liverpool Girls High and Liverpool Boys High are particularly interesting.
“Many of these students have come from war-torn countries and settled in Liverpool to start a new life, so the word ‘peace’ means a lot to them,” she said.
From 7.30pm to 9pm on the evenings of 1-3 and 8-11 November, there will also be a program of activities and performances by re-enactors.
“I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in this remarkable project, especially Esem Projects, Liverpool Girls High School, Liverpool Boys High School, Liverpool RSL sub-branch, Moorebank Heritage Group, Western Sydney University, Liverpool Plaza and community members.
“I can’t wait to see our CBD brought to life by this unique project and I encourage everyone to come out at night to see it.”
