The Council congratulates the Benalla Rotary Club on 50 years of the Meals on Wheels service in Benalla.
The first meals were delivered in 1968 at a cost of 40 cents per meal. The Benalla Rotary Club initiated the service when they realised there was a gap in older, more isolated people having access to meals.
Since the Council began coordinating Meals on Wheels in 1990, the Benalla Rotary Club has been instrumental to the ongoing success of the program by delivering meals on weekends.
Acting Mayor, Cr Peter Davis, said that the community is indebted to the Rotary Club.
“When the Benalla Rotary Club implemented Meals on Wheels fifty years ago, it ensured that as a community we were committed to looking after those who need our support,” said Cr Davis.
“Now, we are grateful to the Rotary Club not just for instigating the service, but for the Club’s ongoing support over fifty years.
“Meals on Wheels plays a vital role in maintaining the health and wellbeing of our community,” said Cr Davis.
Meals on Wheels is supported by the Australian Government Department of Health and the Victorian State Government.
