Council to host free dump weekend in November

To help residents prepare for the upcoming cyclone season, Council is opening the Kirknie Road Landfill for a free dump weekend.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin said residents can take advantage of the unlimited free dumping of domestic waste on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 November.

“Gates will be open from 8am-5pm on Saturday and Sunday to give everyone a chance to clear any rubbish they may have lying about,” Cr McLaughlin said.

“As we near disaster season, it’s important to dispose of any unwanted items that could become a missile during a cyclone.”

Cr McLaughlin encouraged residents to check the general maintenance of their homes when conducting the clean-up.

“Now would be a great time to make sure yards are free of debris, fixtures are secured and gutters are cleared.

“We ask that residents lend a hand to elderly neighbours, family and friends who may need help transporting their rubbish to Kirknie Road Landfill.”

Residents are reminded to cover their loads when travelling to drop off any rubbish.  Residents are also reminded that green waste, scrap metal, tyres and concrete must be separated prior to disposal, and that gas bottles, hazardous waste such as paints and solvents, chemical waste and contaminated soil cannot be accepted at Council landfill or transfer stations.

Commercial waste loads and domestic asbestos disposal will continue to attract standard disposal charges.

The free dumping weekend comes after Council’s recent announcement that logs of all sizes can now be disposed of free of charge at four out of five Council waste facilities. This service does not extend to the Clare facility.
