Masterclass for history enthusiasts

Heritage and history enthusiasts from throughout the region have received expert advice about curating their collections, during a workshop hosted by Council on Thursday.

Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (MAAS) Curator Damian McDonald provided a full-day workshop designed to help regional organisations maintain community-owned collections.

Representatives from the Armidale Folk Museum and Hillgrove Museum – which are both administered by Council - were joined by members from the Armidale, Guyra, Glen Innes and Walcha historical societies.

They were provided with support materials and guidance on how to manage their collections, including developing exhibitions, formulating acquisition policies, identifying significant objects and writing labels.

MAAS is Australia’s contemporary museum for excellence and innovation in applied arts and sciences. Established in 1879, its venues include Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum, the Sydney Observatory and Discovery Centre.

“It’s so important for regional communities to have access to skill development in managing and curating their local heritage objects,” Armidale Folk Museum Team Leader Hayley Ward said.

“Managing and conserving local heritage is an incredible privilege and it’s important that we’re looking after these collections for future generations to enjoy.”
