Blue Mountains City Council joined other local government leaders to develop regional climate solutions at the first ever national summit run by the Cities Power Partnership.
The Cities Power Partnership is a free, national program created by the Climate Council that brings together Australian towns and cities making the switch to clean energy.
Ward 2 Councillor, Brent Hoare, attended the summit on behalf of the Council, which is one of the newest local government bodies to join the Cities Power Partnership.
“The range of big visions and practical ideas to drive real change presented at the Summit was truly inspiring”, he said.
“The two biggest challenges faced by participants are firstly, choosing which of the many strategies and tools available to us are most suitable for our local community. Secondly, we must all work out how to rise to the task of protecting our community, especially our kids, from the clear and present dangers from climate change by moving as fast as the science demands.”
Australian and international mayors from across the political spectrum called for strong, unified action on climate change at the inaugural Cities Power Partnership Summit.
Blue Mountains City Council is among the first 100 Councils to sign up to what is now Australia’s largest Local Government climate initiative.
Cr Hoare said, “Being a part of this initiative puts Council in a strong position to accelerate emission reduction through its Carbon Abatement Action Plan.
“Collaboration with other councils is also key to developing a meaningful regional climate strategy.”
One of the immediate outcomes of the Summit was an invitation from Shane Rattenbury, ACT Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability, for all Cities Power Partnership councils to join Canberra in a bulk purchase of electric vehicles for fleet.
