Dendy Beach Project Update

Council is continuing to work towards the realisation of the renewed Dendy Street Beach precinct.

Yesterday, Bayside’s Mayor Cr Laurence Evans met with Philip Dalidakis MP, Declan Martin, the Labor Candidate for Brighton and Nina Taylor, the Labor Candidate for Southern Metropolitan Region, to discuss the next steps.

Cr Laurence Evans said the meeting was a good opportunity to confirm Labor’s support for Council’s plans to deliver the upgrades to the Dendy Street Beach precinct.

“Council is committed to ensuring that the new pavilion meets the needs of the Brighton Life Saving Club and also provides a high quality experience for visitors to this iconic beach.

“The Club is wholly supportive of Council’s proposals and looks forward to a new, modern facility which is imperative to the Club’s future growth and success,” said Cr Evans.

Minister Dalidakis offered his support and congratulated the Mayor and the councillors for their vision in creating a beautiful and respectful design for the area.

“The Brighton Life Saving Club has been enjoyed by local families and tourists alike for decades. And we want that to see that continue for decades to come.

“Whilst we remain committed to the planning application process running its natural course, we want to make it very clear, unequivocally so, that we fully support the proposed redevelopment plans and progressed by the unanimous decision of Bayside Council and its councillors.

"We have one opportunity to get this right, and I congratulate the Mayor and the council for its vision in creating a beautiful and respectful design for the area,” said Minister Dalidakis.

Cr Evans added that Louise Asher MP Member for Brighton has also offered her support and will continue her advocacy for this project, which will deliver visitation and economic benefits for the area.

The clubhouse has been identified by Life Saving Victoria as one of the highest priority facilities for replacement, Council has been working with the club and the broader community to ensure that the new building meets future needs for its members.

The building will feature storage facilities and a multi-purpose training space for the Brighton Life Saving Club, new accessible public toilets, and a 60 seat cafe with level access from the car park.

Council is working towards progressing the construction of the new pavilion however the project is currently experiencing delays as contaminate soils were discovered during a site assessment in January 2018.

Council is currently meeting all the obligations as set out in the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Clean Up Notice and is continuing to work with the EPA towards progressing the construction of the new pavilion.

A small section of the grassed foreshore area from Dendy Beach, north of the Brighton Life Saving Club remains closed.This area does not represent a safety hazard to the public.
