Green thumbs wanted for Chinchilla Botanic Parklands

Whether you’re a potterer, gardener or budding horticulturalist, the Friends of the Botanic Parklands Reference Group are looking for new members to get their hands dirty for the Chinchilla Botanic Parklands.

First established in October 2017, the Friends of the Botanic Parklands have been busy caring for seedlings which will eventually be planted in the Parklands.

Once the Parklands gates open in 2019, the Friends group will be custodians of the Demonstration Gardens — a display of native trees, grasses and flowering plants best suited to the Western Downs climate which will provide inspiration for backyards across Chinchilla.

The group will also host tours around the gardens, providing insight into the region’s diverse flora and fauna.

Spokesperson for Parks, Open Spaces and Cemeteries Councillor Carolyn Tillman would like to encourage new members to get involved in the Friends group.

“The Friends of the Botanic Parklands Reference Group play such an important role in bringing the Parklands to life, ” she said.

“We are always looking for ways to get the Chinchilla community involved in the Parklands project, so I welcome anyone interested to join us at the next meeting.”

Chinchilla local Karen Auty said that as a member of the Friends Group she has been involved in a number of planning and design decisions that have helped shape the Parklands.

“There is so much more to the Parklands than simply a display garden — this project offers an opportunity for Chinchilla residents of all ages and abilities to become a part of the Parklands, and there are many ways to get involved,” she said.

“I’ve been privileged to be a part of the Friends of the Botanic Garden Reference Group, and I encourage anyone interested to come and join us!”

The next Friends of the Botanic Gardens Reference Group meeting will be held on Thursday 1 November from 10 to 11am at the Chinchilla Parks and Open Spaces Depot (corner Canaga and Railway Street).
