Following a successful state grant application, Campaspe Shire Council will widen a section of the Toolleen Axedale Road in Toolleen.
Mayor, Cr Adrian Weston said the 1.6 kilometre stretch of sealed road from the Northern Highway to the west will be widened from 3.8 metres to 6.2 metres.
The Hon Jaala Pulford MP recently advised success of the application, with the Victorian State Government committing $408,000 to the project through the Job Fund’s Local Roads to Market Program. The contribution is doubling council’s own investment of $204,000.
“The works will start in March and are expected to take approximately 10 weeks to complete. The road will remain open during this time with speed restrictions in place,” Cr Weston said
“This section was identified for the works because of the high volume of heavy vehicles that frequently use the road, particularly due to the growth of the wine industry in the area. Currently there is not enough width of sealed road for two trucks to pass without risking damage to cargo due to moving onto the gravel shoulder.
“Not only will this benefit the local road users, but the upgrade will provide better access to our region for tourism and business.
“Additionally, the upgrades will increase the safety of motorists entering and exiting the intersection of Toolleen Axedale Road and the Northern Highway.
“Council would like to thank the businesses that submitted written support to the grant application. Without these valuable contributions, the project would not have received state funding and would not have gone ahead.”
