Footpath for Francis Street Thursday 01 November

A new footpath being constructed in Francis Street, Bairnsdale will improve pedestrian safety for residents in the area.

The East Gippsland Shire Council project is being undertaken by council’s concreting crew. Perfect conditions last Wednesday and Thursday saw more sections of the footpath constructed.

When complete, the new footpath will extend 600 metres from McCulloch Street to Dawson Street.

Acting Director Operations Fiona Weigall said a street’s need for a footpath is assessed and prioritised under council’s Access and Mobility Framework.

“The need for footpaths throughout the shire to assist our local residents access services and have healthy active lifestyles are identified and listed in the framework and prioritised for delivery,” Ms Weigall said.

“Council also undertakes programmed inspections of existing footpath. The frequency of inspections for each footpath is based on the importance of the location and frequency of traffic for that area.

“In addition to these scheduled inspections, unplanned inspections take place if we receive a report of a hazard. If an inspection shows there is a hazard, works will be undertaken to reduce the risk to pedestrians,” Ms Weigall said.

The concreting crew has received many favourable comments from passersby about the Francis Street footpaths and how it will improve accessibility.
