White Ribbon event 'Real Men Bake Cakes'

Campaspe Shire Council invites the community to join together and say “No” to violence against women at a special White Ribbon morning tea on Echuca Wharf on Friday, 23 November.

Themed ‘Real Men Bake Cakes’, the event will start at 10.30am with 20 high profile men leading the way by baking the morning tea in a symbolic bake off.

Mayor Cr Adrian Weston said violence again women is a serious issue with one in three Australian women affected by physical and/or sexual violence by someone they know.

“One woman a week is killed in our country by a current or former partner and our shire is no exception,” Cr Weston said.

While it is acknowledged that violence can be perpetrated and experienced by both men and women, White Ribbon focuses on one specific type of violence – that of men’s violence against women.

“The White Ribbon Day campaign recognises the positive role that men play in preventing violence against women,” Cr Weston said.

White Ribbon Australia is a part of a global movement of men and boys working to end men’s violence against women. It aims to create an Australian society where all women can live in safety, free from violence and abuse.

Campaspe Shire Council became an accredited White Ribbon Workplace in November 2015. White Ribbon Workplaces promote respectful relationships and gender equality within the workplace and demonstrate a culture of zero tolerance of violence against women.

“Everyone is welcome to come along to the event which not only raises awareness of this important issue, but sees well known public figures compete for bragging rights as the region’s best cake maker.”

“Best part of all – we get to eat the cakes at the morning tea!” Cr Weston said.
