Big list of speakers for water rally

A selection of prominent and passionate figures in the fight for water will address the crowd at tomorrow's protest rally.

The day will begin with a protest march from Town Square at 11am, which will head to Sturt Park for a public gathering and speeches from invited guests.

At the conclusion of the speeches the crowd will be invited to the Musicians Club to view a video on the plight of the Murray-Darling Basin compiled by Australia Institute researcher Maryanne Slattery.

Mayor Darriea Turley AM said she expected a huge day of activism for the Darling Rivers and Menindee Lakes.

"It's just amazing how this event has come together, we put out a call for people to come and address the people of Broken Hill, and we've had an amazing response," she said.

"The day will be a great opportunity not just to send a message that we demand better treatment for our waterways, but to hear from people who can provide amazing insight into the fight for water.

"We should also make special mention of the Darling River Action Group and Darryn Clifton, who will MC tomorrow's event. They have offered tremendous support.

"We look forward to seeing everyone there in full voice tomorrow."

The list of speakers for tomorrow's protest include:

Chris Lamey

The Goondiwindi farmer who hit the headlines after his property was inundated by floodwaters trapped by questionable earthworks. He has first hand experience of the impact of water management measures in Southern Queensland.

Jane MacAllister

Region 4 Chair of the Murray Darling Basin Association. Jane has also stepped up to give a voice to landholders along the anabranch and lower darling while the Central Darling Shire is in Administration. 

Maryanne Slattery

A former MDBA Policy Director now working as a researcher with the Australia Institute, Maryanne has been a key witness in the SA Murray-Darling Basin Royal Commission, and has produced an outstanding video on the plight of the Darling that will be screened at the the Musicians Club after the rally.

Bill Johnson

The former Director of Environmental Water Planning for the MDBA, who now serves on an advisory committee developing the NSW Barwon-Darling water resource plan. He has also served as a key witness in the SA Murray-Darling Basin Royal Commission.

Rob McBride

A well-known figure in the fight for water, Rob and his family from Tolarno Station have been front and centre in raising awareness about the plight of the Darling River.

Peter Black OAM

A man who needs no introduction to locals. He's been a highly respected champion for Broken Hill and the river system for many years, and has served as both our Mayor and State Member.

Darriea Turley AM

The city's current Mayor and a Councillor for Broken Hill for over two decades, and a long-term campaigner for the river and environment. 

Roy Butler

The Shooters and Fishers Party's candidate for the seat of Barwon who has shown a keen interest in the overall welfare of the electorate.

Evelyn Kennedy

Has reiterated her commitment to the environment and rivers by running as the Greens' candidate for Barwon.
