International hockey player Georgina Morgan will feature as guest speaker at this year’s New England Sports Awards ceremony, being held at Armidale City Bowling Club on Thursday 15 November.

Tickets are now on sale for the annual awards night, which celebrates the region’s top junior and senior competitors and officials in a range of sports.

The Junior and Senior Sports Star of the Year Awards will head a list of prizes to be presented during the evening, celebrating achievements by individuals and teams at a local level, in regional competition and further afield.

Georgina returns to Armidale after being part of the Australian team that narrowly missed out on a medal at the 2018 women’s world championships in London in July and August.

Ranked fifth in the world going into the championships, Australia placed fourth after losing the bronze medal play-off against Spain.

Georgina, 25, is one of the youngest members of the Australia’s Hockeyroo squad and made her Olympic debut at the 2016 Games in Rio.

One year earlier, she had a hand in the winning goal as Australia claimed the 2015 World League Final.

Georgina was six years old when she began playing junior hockey in Armidale and went on to represent Sydney Uni Hockey Club. During her time playing for Sydney University, she was chosen for Australia’s team at Junior World Cup competition, beginning her international hockey career.

The New England Sports Awards are held annually by the Armidale Regional Sports Council to encourage and recognise competitors and administrators based in the Armidale region.

Tickets for this year’s awards night can be pre-purchased from 2AD and FM100.3 from today and will also be available at the door.
