We want to hear your vision for Sydney's future
City of Sydney 7 Nov 2018

The first round of public meetings to kick-start the development of the City of Sydney’s new strategic plan, Sustainable Sydney 2050, will start next week.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the City’s existing strategy, Sustainable Sydney 2030, was developed after the largest-ever community consultation program in the City’s history, and the City would conduct another extensive consultation program in the development of this new plan.

“Sustainable Sydney 2030 has helped us deliver unprecedented achievements for our community and been used by other cities as the inspiration in developing their own plans,” the Lord Mayor said.

“But like other cities we are facing significant challenges into the future and while Sustainable Sydney 2030 provides us with the strategies needed to deal with most of them, it’s time we look beyond 2030.

“I want to make sure that Sustainable Sydney 2050 is again led by the community and informed by research and technical advice. We need to consider the kind of city people will inherit in 10, 20 and even 30 years’ time and set new targets for the decades beyond 2030 to 2050.

“It’s what we did in developing Sustainable Sydney 2030 and the results show what can be achieved with good governance, long-term vision and sustained, ethical leadership.”

In the past 10 years urbanisation, globalisation, technology and climate change have continued to challenge cities around the world. The Sustainable Sydney 2050 plan will help ensure Sydney continues to be a leading global city to live, work and visit.

Driven by broad local community feedback, Sustainable Sydney 2030 has resulted in a range of achievements including:

completing over 250 projects – from new and upgraded parks, playgrounds, childcare centres and pools to libraries, theatres and community and cultural spaces building or upgrading 77 parks and 46 playgrounds and planting more than 12,000 street trees creating a new 200km bike network, including separated bike paths separating riders from pedestrians and traffic delivering a $540 million infrastructure program for Green Square, one of Australia’s largest urban renewal projects providing for 61,000 residents and 21,000 workers working with leaders, business and other cities around the world to help us achieve ambitious sustainability goals, including the Better Buildings Partnership, CitySwitch, 100 Resilient Cities and the C40 Climate Leadership Group slashing emissions by 25 per cent in the City’s own operations, and 20 per cent across the local area working to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture through the Eora Journey project, including a series of major artworks and an economic development plan helping grow the city’s economy by almost $50 billion, totalling $125 billion and contributing more than 10 per cent of Australia’s current economic growth.

Everyone with a stake in the City’s future – residents, workers, visitors, students, businesses and community organisations – is invited to help build the Sydney 2050 vision.

Initial community sessions to help develop the plan start this month, with a comprehensive consultation program to begin in early 2019. Four early community sessions will take place on:
