Push to finish projects before Christmas

Council’s men and women in hi-vis are busy repairing roads, upgrading parks, constructing pathways and improving parks throughout the Shire as they endeavour to complete several major capital projects before Christmas.

The reconstruction of a one kilometre section of Hodel Road and the reseal of 12 urban streets are some of the projects Council’s dedicated outdoor staff are busy working on this month.

Teams are also putting the finishing touches on the construction of more than one kilometre of pathway along Seventh Avenue in Home Hill.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin said “This 2.5m wide pathway, which runs from beyond Nineteenth Street to Fourteenth Street, will provide a safe dual purpose route for pedestrians and cyclists to access the Home Hill CBD and schools, and provides opportunity for residents to increase their levels of physical activity through walking, jogging or riding.”

Council is undertaking these projects as part of its $16.6 million investment in capital works and renewals allocated for 2018/19.

Cr Lyn McLaughlin said the massive effort is not out of character for the outdoor staff.

“Our team do a wonderful job all year round, and especially in these hot and humid conditions.

“The work they undertake continuously improves facilities throughout our shire for the benefit of all our residents.

“On behalf of our entire community, I thank them for all they do.”

Meanwhile, Burdekin Shire Council Manager Works Wayne Saldumbide says staff are already preparing for a big 2019.

“Some of our major projects next year include replacing the playground equipment at Alva Park, and the construction of the Nature Based Play Space in Plantation Park as well as the establishment of the mobile Visitor Information Centre.

“It’s an exciting time to be living in the Burdekin.”
