The City of Bayswater and planning consultants Shape Urban were awarded a 2018 Planning Excellence Award on Friday 2 November for the Building Bayswater Project. The Award was presented in the category of ‘public engagement and community planning’.
City of Bayswater Mayor Dan Bull said the City was delighted to receive the prestigious award for a project that is close to his heart.
“Building Bayswater provided our community with the opportunity to share their thoughts, ideas and expectations on how Council should respond to the challenges and opportunities of new development. It allowed us to have a meaningful conversation about future housing types, design innovation and the interface between the public and private domain.
“By engaging our community, we were able to gain a better understanding of what’s important to people, explore the City’s future and create the best possible outcomes for our neighbourhoods.
Building Bayswater has informed the City’s Local Planning Strategy which will provide guidance and direction for land use planning, urban development and the future growth of the City of Bayswater.
Mayor Bull said challenging the status quo made all the difference.
“The success of this project can in no small way be attributed to the community engagement process itself. The selection of a deliberative community panel generated significant interest, with the consultant involved reporting the highest response rate yet for this engagement method across Australia.
“In WA, a community panel has never before been used in developing a Local Planning Strategy.
“Online forums captured valuable input from community members unable to join the community panel along with face-to-face events, pop-ups and the City’s Engage Bayswater community portal.
Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) Awards aim to recognise excellence in planning.
“Building Bayswater enabled us to involve the community in charting the future course for planning and development of the City of Bayswater. We are incredibly proud to be the recipient of this award.
