How to ensure Fremantle remains a safe and welcoming city will be the focus of a community forum on Monday night.
The forum at the Fremantle Town Hall will bring together local residents, service organisations, government and local businesses to share information about the services already operating in Fremantle and identify future community safety priorities.
Senior Sergeant Brad Warburton from Fremantle Police will provide the latest crime and safety statistics, plus explain the new structure for WA Police which will see more officers stationed in Fremantle.
The City of Fremantle’s Community Safety Team Leader Chris Scanlan will talk about the Community Safety Team’s cooperation with local police and the roll-out of the City’s new CCTV strategy, while the City’s Manager of City Design Russell Kingdom will discuss how good urban design can help create an environment in which people feel safe.
Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt said feedback received at the forum will help in the preparation of a new Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan.
“The City of Fremantle is committed to promoting an environment where it is easy for people to lead safe, happy and healthy lives,” Mayor Pettitt said.
“This includes creating an environment where people feel safe, with public spaces that encourage people to linger and interact.
“Fremantle is largely a safe, fun and friendly place, but there is more that we can do together to make it more inviting.
“The forum on Monday provides us with a good opportunity to hear from the community what is working well and also what we could do in future to ensure Freo remains a safe and welcoming city.”
The City of Fremantle’s network of security cameras is set to be expanded following the adoption of a new CCTV strategy by Fremantle Council last month, with an additional 25 cameras to be installed using a $928,000 grant from the federal government’s Safer Communities program.
In April Police Commissioner Chris Dawson announced a restructure of metropolitan police districts, with additional resources given to Perth and Fremantle in recognition of the challenges of policing entertainment precincts.
The Freo Today - City Centre Forum will be held on Monday 12 November at the Fremantle Town Hall, starting at 6pm.
