City commemorates Armistice centenary

A century after Alderman H.G. Davies stood on the balcony of the old Town Hall in Dean Street (now the site of MAMA) clutching a telegram to announce the Armistice that ended the war, Mayor Kevin Mack and the Commandant of Bandiana’s Army Logistics Training Centre, Colonel Matt Patching, will commemorate the anniversary from the balcony of MAMA.
It coincides with a display, Armistice: Albury’s Armistice Celebration, which examines life in Albury at the time of the war’s end, looking at the immediate impact of war, peace and the soldiers’ return home.
It has been developed from funding provided by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs Armistice Centenary Grants program.
It will be on display in the council offices foyer from 5 November 2018 to 5 April 2019.
Meanwhile, as part of the city’s Armistice commemorations, a special ceremony at the Pioneer Cemetery on Sunday 11 November at 4pm will honour more than 240 servicemen and women who were laid to rest in Albury.
At 5pm, pipers from the Scots School Albury will play a special tribute to the more-than 2,000 pipers from all nations who were killed or wounded during the Great War.
