Most people grow up with only one citizenship.
For artist Tamara Bekier, she had six by the time she was 19.
Bekier’s upcoming exhibition at Backspace Gallery, Gossamer Threads, focusses on people and their life journey, including her own tumultuous journey growing up in war-torn Europe.
Experiencing atrocities that no child should experience, many viewers will see a connection between Bekier’s life story and that of which so many refugees and migrants are experiencing today.
Bekier began painting late in life but that has not held her back from exhibiting across Australia and around the world. Over this time her painting style has evolved greatly through her enjoyment for experimenting with colour, texture and juxtaposition of light and dark.
Her exhibition in Ballarat will take viewers on a journey of her latest paintings, drawings, ceramics and poetry.
Gossamer Threads opens this week, with opportunities to meet Bekier between 2-4pm on Saturday 10 November. Melbourne band The Nexus Project will also perform on the day.
The exhibition will remain open to the public until Sunday 2 December.
Backspace Gallery is an initiative of the City of Ballarat, which is committed to supporting quality contemporary visual art, design and craft.
